Blackwell signs with Texas Rangers

LEAGUE CITY — Clear Creek graduate Shawn Blackwell officially is a member of the Texas Rangers organization.

Blackwell, The Daily News’ baseball co-player of the year, agreed to a contract with the Rangers on Wednesday night. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

“I’ve been dreaming of this day ever since I’ve been playing baseball,” Blackwell said. “For this to finally happen, I feel relieved but so happy at the same time. It’s a dream come true.”

Blackwell was drafted by the Rangers in the 24th round (724th overall) of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft in June after a stellar high school career at Creek.

As a junior, he went 4-4 with a 1.88 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 521/3 innings.

Blackwell was even better this season, going 7-4 with a 2.28 ERA and striking out 90 in 641/3 innings. He also allowed just one earned run in district play, finishing with a school-record 0.16 ERA. The previous mark was 0.76.

Blackwell had committed to Kansas before his senior season. However, the Rangers made him an offer he couldn’t pass up.

“For me to skip going to college and missing out on that experience, it had to be a good offer,” Blackwell said. “It had to be worth missing that stuff, and the offer definitely was.”

As part of the contract, Blackwell still will have his entire college education paid for. He said he can even start taking classes during the offseason as part of the program.

Along with earning All-County honors this season, Blackwell also was a unanimous first-team all-district selection. He participated in the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game and was a member of Team Texas in the 33rd annual Sunbelt Classic.

Blackwell is the second Creek graduate to sign with a MLB organization in the past two years. Pitcher Jarred Cosart signed with the Philadelphia Phillies last summer.

Former Seattle Mariners star Jay Buhner currently is the most well-known Creek graduate to play major league baseball. Blackwell said he hopes someday to have his name alongside Buhner’s on the right field wall at Wildcat Stadium.

Blackwell will have a physical this weekend with the team, before it’s determined where his next stop will be. He’ll either report to Arizona for rookie ball sometime next week, or wait four weeks before heading to the team’s instructional league.

“This is one more step,” Blackwell said. “It isn’t my goal right here. It’s what I’ve been dreaming of, but my ultimate goal is playing pro ball.”

Blackwell dedicates every game he plays to his late grandfather Owen C. Smith. Smith passed away on Blackwell’s 10th birthday. He has the date (11-15-00) written in the bill of his camp.

Blackwell said his grandfather was watching him sign on Wednesday night.

“I’m sure he’s proud of me,” Blackwell said.

Rangers Sign Blackwell For $300,000

The Rangers have signed 24th-rounder Shawn Blackwell for $300,000, twice MLB’s recommended maximum for players selected after the fifth round.

A righthander from Clear Creek High (League City, Texas), Blackwell usually sits in the high 80s with his fastball and spins a promising curveball. At 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, he has plenty of room to add strength on his frame. He had committed to Kansas.

The Texas Rangers have signed their 13th pick of the 24th round of the June draft, Shawn Blackwell, RHP-Clear Creek-2009. Blackwell is a big 6' 5" 195lb RHP who is able to deliver 90's fastballs effortlessly. he has a very project able frame and should develop into an even more powerful pitcher for the Rangers. Shawn was a 1st Team All Houston selection at H5AB and a member of the HABCA All Stars as well as Team Texas Sunbelt and American Legion State Runner-up, League City Post-554.

Kansas baseball loses signee

Ritch Price figured pitcher Shawn Blackwell was signed, sealed and all but delivered to Kansas University.

Then the Texas Rangers swooped in last week and made Blackwell an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“He was registered, went through orientation, the whole thing,” said KU baseball coach Price. “We’re absolutely shocked.”

Blackwell, a right-hander from League City, Texas, was taken in the 24th round of the June free-agent draft by the Rangers and rejected the club’s first offer to turn pro.

More than two months later, however, Texas upped the ante, and he signed Wednesday. Price said the Rangers gave Blackwell $300,000 after making an initial offer of just $2,500.

“We didn’t expect that kind of money,” Price said. “But did you see the signing bonuses (major-league teams) were handing out before the deadline? Absolutely shocking.”

While hurling for Clear Creek High in League City last spring, Blackwell compiled a 7-4 record with a 2.28 earned-run average. He struck out 90 in 64 innings.

Price projected Blackwell as the Jayhawks’ No. 4 starter at the beginning of the season with an opportunity, if he impressed early, to move into the three-man weekend rotation during Big 12 Conference play.

“Then when he was a sophomore,” Price said, “we saw him as an impact guy for us.”

In addition to Blackwell’s six-figure contract, the Rangers agreed to pay his college tuition.

“For me to skip going to college and missing out on that experience, it had to be a good offer,” Blackwell told the Galveston Daily News. “It had to be worth missing that stuff, and the offer definitely was.”

Price revealed that another KU mound signee, right-hander Tanner Poppe of Girard, received an 11th-hour offer from the Royals after being Kansas City’s 37th-round pick in the June draft.

“Thankfully for us, Poppe turned them down,” Price said. “He moved into the dorm on Saturday.”

Price has opted to split Blackwell’s scholarship money between outfielder Brian Heere and pitcher Brett Bochy.

“At this date, we can’t replace Blackwell,” the KU coach said, “so we rewarded two players coming back.”

Heere, a senior from Lawrence High, was the Jayhawks’ second-leading hitter last spring with a .364 average. He was the team leader in on-base percentage at a glossy .459.

Bochy, a junior right-handed pitcher and son of San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy, posted a 5-0 record last spring in 30 mound appearances, all in relief.

In addition to Poppe, Price has three more recruits coming in — shortstop Brandon Macias, infielder Kevin Kuntz and catcher Alex DeLeon.
