More good news from the 2009 draft: Ryan Gunhouse was drafted by the Mets in the 42nd round. Ryan has already signed to play baseball with Angelina, so he may choose college and redraft next year. We'll see... Also, James Wooster, a 2007 Creek grad who has been playing for Alvin CC, was drafted by the Mets in the 44th round. Galveston Daily News article by Joshua Buckley is below the fold. Three more county alums drafted into MLBThree Galveston County alums were selected in the final day of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft Thursday. Santa Fe grad Taylor Terrasas and Creek grads Ryan Gunhouse and James Wooster were selected in the late rounds of the annual draft. The St. Louis Cardinals picked Terrasas with the 1179th pick. Gunhouse (1274) and Wooster (1334) were both picked by the New York Mets. “It feels good to hear your name called out,” Terrasas said. “To be honest, I didn’t think I would be drafted.” Terrasas was a standout for Santa Fe this season, sporting a .515 average in 22 games. Terrasas also had 20 RBIs, 22 runs, 19 stolen bases and a .621 on-base percentage. Terrasas already has committed to Louisiana Tech on a baseball scholarship, but now has the option to sign with the Cardinals. He said his mind is not made up. “I’m going to have to hear what (the Cardinals) have to say,” Terrasas said. “Right now it’s in the air. Everybody has a price. I’ll have to talk with my parents and decide how much they have to offer for me to sign instead of going to Louisiana Tech.” The selection of Gunhouse and Wooster made it three Creek players who were drafted this year. The Texas Rangers drafted Pitcher Shawn Blackwell on Wednesday. “It’s been a good last two days for Creek,” said Creek coach Jim Mallory. “I don’t know if it says anything about the program, but it says we have some good players at our school. It’s a great honor to be drafted.” Gunhouse broke the Creek single-season record for home runs last season with 10. He broke former Seattle Mariner Jay Bruner’s record. This year for the Wildcats, Gunhouse hit .366 with three home runs and 18 RBIs. He was also the team’s starting catcher for the second straight season. Wooster graduated from Creek in 2007. He made the Region XIV South all-conference team as a freshman outfielder for Alvin this season. He hit .345 with three home runs and 19 RBIs. The Mets appear to be more interested in Wooster’s pitching ability, listing him as a left-handed pitcher. Mallory said he was expecting both players to get drafted. “I’m not surprised at all,” Mallory said. “They’ve got some great tools.” Mallory said he wasn’t sure if either player would sign or elect to stay in college. Gunhouse is committed to Angelina Junior College. “I don’t get involved in that stuff,” Mallory said. “I’m a teacher, so of course I stress education. But that decision is between the players and their parents.” The deadline for players to sign with the teams that drafted them is Aug. 15.
