Creek Falls To Brazoswood PDF Print E-mail

In a much-anticipated re-match between Clear Creek and Brazoswood, each team was going to have to bring their "A" game.  Unfortunately, all three of Creek's teams fell to the Buccaneers.

Sophomore

Two errors by Wildcats in the first inning that scored two unearned runs put Creek at an early disadvantage.  And with only one hit from Creek (a triple from Dalton Reason) in the entire game, Creek couldn't catch up.  A highlight of the offense was in the seventh inning:  Dalton Reason's triple had him on third base when Tyler Pierce batted him in with an extremely hard-hit line drive straight at the pitcher!  It knocked him over, but he recovered enough to throw Pierce out at 1B, though Pierce got the RBI.  Thankfully, Reason's hit and Pierce's RBI ensured that Bwood did not achieve a no-hit shut-out.

Defensively, two double plays were highlights of the game:  3-4 (Thiess->Tyler Mules) in the first inning and a 4-3 (Mules->Thiess) in the third inning.

Varsity

The Varsity's game against Brazoswood was intended to be a big deal.  The players seemed well-psyched and mentally prepared.  It was also Left Field Loud Mouth Night at Wildcat Field and a lot of preparation by the parents and Joe Barba had gone in to making the night a success.  Creek was certainly going to enjoy an electrifying home field advantage.  Unfortunately, the game was rained out in a torrential downpour Friday night and was rescheduled for Saturday night at Alvin HS.

Creek took a slim early lead: Dyllan McGregor scored off his double to left field in the first inning, and CJ McElroy was HBP in the second. Putting McElroy on first base is literally putting him in scoring position: he stole two bases during the next two at-bats to score on a catcher's overthrow to third.  That was the last of Creek's scoring for the night.  A controversial call in the third inning deprived the Cats of more runs:  bases were loaded and Greg Olson stole home, sliding head-first under the catcher's tag to score, but the umpire called it the third out, effectively shutting down the inning.  Later doubles from Steve Collins and Ryan Gunhouse never made it home.

On defense, Reed Gordy made an outstanding play at 1B for a third out - he knocked down a hard hit and scrambled back to first base to beat out the runner, getting the third out in the fourth inning.

The Bwood pitchers left room for Creek to really press an advantage with their base runners.  Unfortunately for Creek, the Bucs rightfielder made a couple of plays from deep right field, throwing out two Wildcats in scoring position.

Thre are only two games left in the district play of the season:  Creek plays at Alvin on Friday night (5/1), and at home (for Senior Night) against Clear Lake on Saturday night (5/2).   Keep on eye on the district standings.
